The Evolution of Royalty Crossing&nbsp; Royalty Crossing has been a familiar landmark in Charlottetown for more than 50 years, growing and transforming alongside the community it serves. The mall first opened in 1974 as&nbsp;Towers Mall, named after its original anchor tenant, the Towers department store. From the start, it became a popular shopping destination for Islanders.&nbsp; A major expansion in 1990 introduced Empire Theatres, adding a new entertainment experience that attracted families, movie-goers, and visitors from across&nbsp;the&nbsp;island. Just a year later, the mall entered a period of&nbsp;significant change. The Towers brand was&nbsp;purchased&nbsp;by The Hudson’s Bay Company and converted into a Zellers, prompting&nbsp;the first&nbsp;name change&nbsp;– now the&nbsp;Charlottetown Mall.&nbsp;This period also included the property’s first major renovation, giving the centre a fresh, modernized look.&nbsp; The early 2000s saw further growth as new anchor stores&nbsp;- including Winners,&nbsp;SportChek, Dollarama, and&nbsp;Moores&nbsp;Clothing for Men&nbsp;-&nbsp;joined the mall. These additions broadened the shopping experience and helped shape the retail mix that many Islanders still recognize today.&nbsp; In 2013, Empire Theatres rebranded as&nbsp;Cineplex Cinemas, continuing the tradition of providing a quality entertainment experience. That same year, Zellers closed its&nbsp;doors,&nbsp;and the space was taken over by Target, creating a buzz of excitement in the community. Although Target closed in 2015, the space it occupied soon became an opportunity for future redevelopment and growth.&nbsp; A major milestone arrived in 2021 when the mall was&nbsp;purchased&nbsp;by Killam Apartment REIT and officially renamed&nbsp;to&nbsp;Royalty Crossing. With new ownership came a renewed vision for the property—one focused on modernizing the mall, enhancing the visitor experience, and expanding services for the community.&nbsp; Today, Royalty Crossing is experiencing an exciting wave of revitalization. It was a running joke, a shared daydream, and a constant conversation between&nbsp;the two women. But beneath the laughter was a real ambition: to turn a passion for baking into something extraordinary.&nbsp;After attending culinary school and earning&nbsp;their&nbsp;Red Seal certifications,&nbsp;they&nbsp;had the training and the talent&nbsp;- they&nbsp;just needed the right moment. That moment arrived in the middle of the COVID pandemic, when the world felt uncertain. One of the women&nbsp;offered a simple,&nbsp;life-changing&nbsp;“Let’s do it.” And just like that, For Real Dough was born.&nbsp;The crown on their logo? A tribute to the empire&nbsp;they had&nbsp;always talked about—and the friend who helped make it real.&nbsp;Those early months were spent testing, tweaking, and perfecting every recipe from scratch. Nothing was borrowed, nothing duplicated.
